Social Media: Privacy

Anyone has the right to say whatever they want, all too often the strongest advocates of that right forget that anyone also has the right to public information. Gmail and Facebook gladly turn the information provided from their users into targeted marketing opportunities whether we know it or not. Even lesser known is the ability for users to customize privacy settings on their favorite social networking sites. No program will forcefully subject its users to submit all of their information, especially in terms of using that information for financial gains.

An important factor in information distribution and second party use is the network's ability to manipulate information only goes as far as what is PUBLICLY posted online. The same could be said for pictures or statuses on social networking sites. There is a 0 percent chance of someone sharing private information if it is never publicly posted. Just a little food for thought.

This site explains it a little better than I can : http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2065928/Social-Media-The-Privacy-and-Security-Repercussions

On a different note, ethical matters in social media are of equal importance. Four of the most prevalent problems can be more fully understood in this article: http://www.openforum.com/idea-hub/topics/technology/article/social-media-ethics-4-common-dilemmas-ben-parr

The topic of misrepresentation really intrigued me. Almost everywhere you look on the web scams and misrepresented information is posted in hopes to fool or mislead the general public. This problem is not new by any means as scams have been around for ages, but more recently the older and more gullible generation are being taken advantage of with their limited computer skills. Free does not mean free, especially on the world wide web. If something seems too good to be true (giveaways, cruises, large sums of money, etc) it probably is.

PSA Draft

Chivalry is not dead…it just goes unnoticed.

We have decided to take the side of men who try to show they care, but all they do simply goes unnoticed.
For the 60 second video we will be showing a couple going out on a date. During this date the PSA will show several instances where the man attempts to be kind courteous respectful by opening doors, complimenting, buying flowers, etc…and all those things will go unnoticed. His patience will be wearing thin by the end of the date and will refuse the offer given by the girl to go out a second time. Across the screen after he gives his refusal will say…Chivalry is not dead…it just goes unnoticed.
This 60 second clip will be broken down into 6 different scenes. The first five will show his attempts to be chivalrous, but all going unnoticed. The sixth scene will be escorting her to the door where she asks “hey that was really fun, we should go out again sometime.” In response the guy will say “no thanks toots.” The final scene will be our call to action “Chivalry is not dead…it just goes unnoticed”.

-Scene 1: He calls the girl but gets her voicemail and leaves a message. She texts a single word, “sure”.
Our radio spot will be more or less the same idea but instead of showing having the audio of the scenes that are shown in the television sequence, we will have a very masculine narrator voice asking if the audience has experience a few of the situations. He will say something like “Men have you ever called a girl before a date, left a message then received a one word text reply.”

Perh(APPS) you should read this

Most smart phone users are familiar with the applications on their phones, otherwise known as "apps". These applications allow users to more easily access the programs they frequent the most. Some phones come embedded with certain apps, these are referred to as native, and most other applications can be purchased from itunes or other digital marketplaces. Apps provide a convenience and practical use never before known to any generation. Hundreds of years ago maps were made based on the knowledge of experienced individuals who were familiar with a particular region. In 2011 an app can tell you where you are, what you are near and how to get to your desired location in a matter of seconds. Astonishing.

But what is the purpose of apps? Some people claim that these helpmates can change your life: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704739504576067940909870176.html

In my personal use of apps on my smart phone, I frequently rely on the GPS and weather features to help me prepare for my day and travel situations. Though I take this technology for granted, my grandparents cannot even begin to fathom my magical methods. They just nod their heads in awe as I effortlessly thumb through my tasks for the day. Other essential/interesting apps I have discovered include: Pandora, ESPN score center, mobile email of course, gaming apps, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and of course the local and national newspaper apps.

While on the phone cruising through different features, don't forget to text your friends about the new incredible apps. Text messaging needs no introduction or explanation but I found this article to be interesting:http://www.articlesbase.com/computers-articles/the-history-of-text-messaging-1177228.html

It blows my mind to know of what critical conversations take place via text messaging. I have been guilty of such measures but in my defense I was but a teenager. Today it is commonplace for couples to begin and end their dating experience with the simple send button on their phones.

Texting can be a great medium in terms of effective communication, but more regularly published are the evils and mishaps it has caused. Just like with anything else, media is only what we make of it.  Lol Haha Gtg!

                                   COLLEGIATE ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK

Students and Staff at Utah State University Help With Nation Problem

LOGAN, Utah - Every year students across the nation partake in the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Many of those students under-aged and what some would call under-responsible. Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week is a national event recognized by numerous colleges. Utah State University will be participating from October 24-28.

"The Health and Wellness Center (HWC)  hopes to make students aware of the consequences of alcohol misuse including drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and other alcohol related misfortunes," said HWC employee Erika Rasmussen.

The center plans to launch the "Green Bean Campaign", designed to encourage students to help friends regulate alcohol use. The campaign associates over consumption of green beans to alcohol abuse. The HWC hopes students will help their peers to drink responsibly at all times and places.

Social Media: Search Engine Optimization

Once upon a time, people around the world wide web typed in a desired website into the URL space at the top of their browser. They never bothered to "Ask Jeeves" what he thought about their inquiry. Carefully written web addresses were standard procedure for navigation of the Internet. Those days are long over.

Aside from stubborn senior citizen users, almost everyone who surfs the web does so now with the help of a search engine. This tool targets key words or phrases in a query to bring up the most specific and closely associated results. And misspellings? Search engines often politely suggest, "Did you mean...." Yes, yes we did mean that Google. The evolution of the search engine technology starts way back at a system called Archie and progressed towards Altavista, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and now the more frequently used Google and Bing.

So what are the benefits of businesses using a search engine?  Here are just four examples:
http://www.techiemania.com/4-benefits-of-search-engine-optimization-you-need-to-know.html

Location is a vital part of a company's success or lack there of. This is true in both physical and virtual aspects. If a company can appear accessible to the general public, consumers will most likely support a convenient and familiar business opposed to one that is difficult to find.

To paraphrase and conform a biblical passage to our time, "search (engine) and ye shall find, Google and it shall be opened unto you."

And now I move from searching key words to tagging them. Tagging refers to accounting for someone or something/idea/concept in an online post whether it be for photo files, music, location services or just text format. Pictures can be shown to have been taken from a certain geographical location which is just one example of geotagging.

Metatagging "is used by search engines to allow them to more accurately list your site in their indexes."
http://www.philb.com/metatag.htm

When a YouTube video is posted to the Internet and contains content that fits into multiple categories, the source posting the video will often tag themes that relate to the video's content or purpose. This way those who are searching for similar things can find this video and it will be extremely accessible for those who are specifically looking for it, even if they forget the video's title.
